When the voltage on the varistor is lower than its threshold, the current that flows through it is very small, which is equivalent to a resistor with an infinite resistance value. That is, when the voltage on it is lower than its threshold, it is equivalent to a disconnected state switch. When the voltage on the varistor exceeds its threshold, the current that flows through it surges, which is the equivalent of an infinitely small resistance. In other words, when the voltage above it is higher than its threshold, it is equivalent to a closed state switch.
